Build Your Capsule Wardrobe

Posted on March 23rd, by Melanie

When styling clients, I often talk about building a capsule wardrobe. A capsule wardrobe should be at least 60-70% basics, and then 30-40% trend. What happens when you build up your closet this way, is that you are able to mix and match better, you have invested in basics that can be worn year after year, and you really make the most of what is in your closet. I find so many people buy things that they wear once! This is a terrible way to shop, it is like throwing money away.

Once you build up your capsule wardrobe you will actually save money, and be able to invest in the clothing and accessories you really love!

Everyone’s capsule wardrobe will be different, depending on your lifestyle. I am going to share with you my ideal “mom” wardrobe. These are items that fit into my lifestyle, and probably many of yours.… Continue Reading

Our KC Spring Break

Posted on March 20th, by Melanie

I did it. I survived 10 days here in KC with both my kids, during a pretty brutally cold Spring Break.

Some of you may or may not have seen my insta story last week, but I decided to take the iPads away from my kids. They were becoming SO dependent on them, and truthfully I was a little bit too. Since I work from home, I would allow them to be on their ipads while I worked or if I was trying to get stuff done around the house. It wasn’t good. My kids started acting nasty when I made them put them away. My son was acting really awful. Like, really angry if he wasn’t able to play on it. I finally got so tired of their behavior I decided to take them away all together! It was the best decision I have made.

I did let them use it for about a total of 3 hours the entire break.… Continue Reading

Kansas City: Hotel Sorella + Spa on Penn

Posted on March 16th, by Melanie

Hotel Sorella; Kansas City’s newest hotel on the Country Club Plaza is now partnering with Spa on Penn to bring spa services to the hotel.

The lobby at Hotel Sorella

Hotel Sorella is great if you live in Kansas City and want to experience a “staycation”. The location is the best (right off the Country Club Plaza) and they even have an outdoor rooftop pool!

You do not have to be a hotel guest to schedule a spa appointment at Hotel Sorella. This is a great place to spend an afternoon with a spa service, lunch, and then go shop on the plaza.

Francesca’s Restaurant at the hotel serves breakfast until 10:30 each  morning

Their Partner, Spa on Penn has been located in Kansas City’s Westport neighborhood for many years. They have dedicated aestheticians that are experts at what they do.

Now at Hotel Sorella you can enjoy those same services!… Continue Reading

Our Weekend

Posted on March 7th, by Melanie

My dad was doing work in South Dakota last week, so he drove a few hours south to see us for the weekend. My kids are obsessed and always love when he comes to visit. We packed a lot in, in just a short 48 hours with him!

Friday night we took him and the kids to Ragazza. My dad couldn’t stop raving about their Bolognese; it really is SO good.

Their Limoncello Sparkler is my favorite. They use a house made limoncello, mixed with prosecco and soda.

Saturday he took the kids tennis shoe shopping on the plaza; and of course they dragged him into Zoom for a toy. That is what Grandpa’s are for, right?

J got thinking putty…my kids are so obsessed with this stuff! It’s kind of like designer silly putty. This one was metallic gold sparkles.

fun at J.Crew 🙂 I just realized J. only has one shoe on!… Continue Reading

Scout Travels: Malibu/Palisades/Santa Monica

Posted on February 15th, by Melanie

It is back to reality after an amazing weekend with my childhood and High School friends in California. One of the girls lives out there, and at our 20 year reunion we talked about taking a trip to visit her. What started as a text string with 4 of us at the end of December, ended up in a trip planned for all of us to go to California in early February to celebrate all of us turning 40. I love when things like that sort of fall in place at the last minute.

We all grew up in Apple Valley, Minnesota. The 5 of us were not all super close in high school, but I have a different connection with each of them. Over the past 10 years; with social media and 2 reunions we had all re-connected. It is fun knowing some of these girls since I was 6, and seeing everyone grow up, develop their careers, get married and have kids.… Continue Reading
